ECC agent harness OS wired into a repo's dev workflow with Codex and Anthropic Skills

Software & DevOps

Set up ECC as an agent harness layer over a repo, then ran dev tasks through it.

What they did

They treated ECC as the harness layer rather than a single tool: cloned the repo, read the README and docs, and installed the npm packages (ecc-universal, ecc-agentshield) plus the GitHub App. Then they wired the harness to two execution surfaces — Codex for code edits and Anthropic Skills for reusable task procedures — so the agent had both a coding runtime and packaged skills to call. They picked one bounded task (a small feature plus tests) and ran it through the harness, using ECC's agent definitions and guardrails to constrain what the agent could touch. They also ran the agentshield package as a pre-flight check on the agent configuration before letting it write to the repo, and reviewed the diff manually before committing.

How it went

The harness gave a repeatable structure: skills for procedure, Codex for edits, and a shield check before writes. The task landed with tests passing and a reviewable diff. Polish is decent but setup-heavy — most of the effort went into configuration, not the actual code change.

Worth knowing

ECC is a fast-moving project with many moving parts (npm packages, GitHub App, multiple agent surfaces), so version drift is a real risk. The README is badge- and link-dense; the actual install and config steps need to be read from docs, not skimmed. Agentshield is a check, not a guarantee — human review of diffs is still required.

Wiring

Order: (1) clone ECC and read README plus docs/ for install steps; (2) install npm packages ecc-universal and ecc-agentshield; (3) install the ECC Tools GitHub App if PR-level integration is wanted; (4) configure the harness — point it at Codex as the editing runtime and register Anthropic Skills as callable procedures; (5) run ecc-agentshield over the agent config as a pre-flight gate; (6) scope a single task, run it, and review the diff before commit. Connections: ECC sits between the agent and the repo, Codex does the edits, Skills supply procedures, agentshield validates config.

Try it yourself

Read the ECC README and docs in this repo. Set up ECC as the agent harness for this project: install the relevant npm packages, configure Codex as the code-editing runtime and Anthropic Skills for reusable procedures, and run ecc-agentshield against the config before any writes. Then pick one small, well-scoped task in this repo (a bug fix or small feature with tests), run it through the harness end to end, and show me the diff plus test results for review. Do not commit without my approval.
