Open-source desktop app orchestrating CAMEL agents for local work.

What they did

They installed the Eigent desktop app, which wraps CAMEL multi-agent orchestration in a local cowork interface. Instead of writing agent code, they described a task in natural language and let Eigent spin up a team of specialized worker agents — a coordinator plus sub-agents for search, browsing, and file handling. The agents ran locally against the user's own machine and API keys, coordinating through CAMEL's role-playing framework to break the goal into subtasks, execute them, and report back. They used it for a mixed workload: gathering information from the web, reading and summarizing local documents, and producing a consolidated output file. Because Eigent is open source and built on CAMEL, they could inspect the agent definitions and adjust model providers rather than being locked into a hosted black box.

How it went

The workflow produced a usable consolidated deliverable without writing orchestration code, and the local-first design kept files and keys on the machine. Polish is that of an actively developed open-source desktop app: the multi-agent flow works, but output quality depends heavily on the chosen model and on how precisely the task is scoped.

Worth knowing

Requires installing a desktop app and supplying your own model API keys; agent runs can be slow and token-hungry, and long multi-step tasks may need supervision or re-prompting. Documentation and agent behavior change quickly across releases, and there is no guarantee of deterministic results.

Wiring

Install the Eigent desktop app from the official download or build from the eigent-ai/eigent repo. Configure a model provider and API key in settings so the CAMEL-based agents have an LLM backend. Create a task in the cowork UI; Eigent's coordinator agent decomposes it and dispatches sub-agents that use browser and file tools on the local machine. Grant file access to the target repo directory, run the task, then review and iterate on the produced artifacts.

Try it yourself

Set up Eigent locally and configure my model provider key. Then use its multi-agent cowork flow to: (1) research the current state of open-source agent orchestration frameworks, (2) read the docs and README files in this repo, and (3) write a single markdown brief at docs/agent-landscape.md comparing approaches, citing sources, and flagging anything it could not verify.
