One-command website cloner that rebuilds any URL as a clean Next.js app
Discovered from README cross-links · yesterday
Give your coding agent a URL and it recreates the site as Next.js.
What they did
They set up the ai-website-cloner-template as a standalone project: asked their coding agent to clone the repo into a new folder, strip the origin remote, install dependencies, and run `npm run check` so the template was verified and ready. Then, with browser access enabled in the agent, they ran `/clone-website https://example.com` against a target site. The agent captured the page's design references and recreated the layout, styling, and content as a Next.js app inside the template, producing a clean codebase rather than a raw HTML dump. After the first build, they iterated by asking the agent for changes — tweaks to sections, copy, and styling — treating the generated app as a normal repo they could edit and extend.
How it went
The template is designed to produce a working Next.js recreation of a target page from a single command, with the agent handling structure, styling, and content extraction. Results are best with Claude Code plus a strong model; Codex, Cursor, and OpenCode are also supported. The output is a starting point meant for further editing, not a pixel-perfect production clone, and complex interactive behavior or backend logic generally needs manual follow-up.
Worth knowing
You need an agent with browser access enabled, and quality varies by model and by how complex the target site is. Cloning someone else's site raises copyright and trademark concerns — use it for inspiration, your own sites, or with permission. Dynamic content, auth flows, and backend behavior won't come across automatically, and the template's `npm run check` only validates setup, not clone fidelity.
Wiring
Clone the template repo into a fresh folder and remove the origin remote so it's a standalone project. Run the install step and `npm run check` to confirm the Next.js toolchain is healthy. Open the project in an agent that has browser access (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or OpenCode). The `/clone-website <url>` command drives the agent to fetch the target page, extract design references and content, and write Next.js components and styles into the template's app structure. After generation, use the normal dev server to preview and keep iterating with the agent on layout, copy, and styling.
Try it yourself
Set up https://github.com/JCodesMore/ai-website-cloner-template as a standalone project in a new folder on my computer. Ask me where to put it, clone the repository, remove its origin remote, install dependencies, and run `npm run check`. Then, with browser access enabled, run `/clone-website https://example.com` to recreate that site as a Next.js app, and show me the file structure and how to run it locally.
