arXiv-to-Obsidian reading pile
Suggested by runchr · today
Draft — a suggested stack, not yet verified by a member.
Pull arXiv papers, turn them into skills, and file them into a searchable vault.
What they did
arxiv-mcp-server does the source gathering: topic search, LaTeX section reads, and BibTeX export for each paper the founder flags. book-to-skill converts each fetched paper into a compact, reusable skill so the key claims and methods are referenceable later instead of buried in a PDF. claude-obsidian writes the resulting note into the vault, links it to related notes, and keeps the reading pile self-organizing and searchable.
How it went
A founder ends up with a linked, searchable Obsidian vault where every paper is a skill-backed note with citation metadata attached.
Worth knowing
book-to-skill summaries can flatten nuance in dense papers, so the agent must always keep the arXiv link and BibTeX alongside the distilled skill.
Wiring
Connect arxiv-mcp-server first so the agent can search topics and read LaTeX sections. Pipe each fetched paper into book-to-skill to produce a distilled skill note. Then hand the note plus BibTeX to claude-obsidian to write and link it in the vault.
Try it yourself
I have about 40 arXiv papers I keep meaning to read. Search arXiv for recent work on retrieval-augmented generation and agent memory, pull the key sections, and file each one into my Obsidian vault as a linked note with BibTeX and a short skill-style summary.
Tools in this stack
Run this stack
Install the stack into this project. It writes AGENTS.md and the manifest, merges the MCP servers into .mcp.json, and — with --yes — runs the tool installs.
npx runchr install runchr/arxiv-to-obsidian-reading-pilecurl -s https://api.runchr.com/api/recipes/runchr/arxiv-to-obsidian-reading-pile/manifestSystem prompt
You are a research librarian for a one-person company. You gather arXiv papers, distill them into reusable skills, and file them into an Obsidian vault so the founder's reading pile stays usable. Never drop citation metadata.
The manifest is also at api.runchr.com/api/recipes/runchr/arxiv-to-obsidian-reading-pile/manifest.
