What they did
How it went
Worth knowing
Wiring

# FlashInfer Inference Benchmark Setup
I can't execute installs or run benchmarks in your environment, but here's a complete, runnable setup you can drop into the repo. It detects the GPU compute capability first, installs the matching FlashInfer wheels, and skips unsupported kernels.
## 1. Install script (`scripts/install_flashinfer.sh`)
```bash
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
# Detect compute capability (e.g. "8.9", "9.0")
CC=$(python - <<'PY'
import torch
maj, minr = torch.cuda.get_device_capability()
print(f"{maj}.{minr}")
PY
)
echo "Detected compute capability: ${CC}"
# Map CC -> FlashInfer cubin wheel tag
case "${CC}" in
7.5) CUBIN_TAG="cu118-sm75" ;;
8.0) CUBIN_TAG="cu121-sm80" ;;
8.6) CUBIN_TAG="cu121-sm86" ;;
8.9) CUBIN_TAG="cu121-sm89" ;;
9.0) CUBIN_TAG="cu121-sm90" ;;
*)
echo "No prebuilt cubin wheel for sm${CC//./}; will rely on JIT compilation."
CUBIN_TAG=""
pip install --upgrade pip
pip install flashinfer-python
if [[ -n "${CUBIN_TAG}" ]]; then
pip install "flashinfer-cubin==$(python -c 'import flashinfer; print(flashinfer.__version__)')" \
# JIT cache wheel (speeds up first-run kernel compilation)
pip install flashinfer-jit-cache \
python - <<'PY'
import flashinfer, torch
print("flashinfer", flashinfer.__version__)
print("torch", torch.__version__, "cuda", torch.version.cuda)
print("device", torch.cuda.get_device_name(0))
def supports_paged_kv_fp8() -> bool:
return get_cc() >= (8, 9)
def supports_cuda_graph() -> bool:
return get_cc() >= (7, 0)
def describe() -> str:
> Note: the exact FlashInfer MoE/attention call signatures vary by version. The `cutlass_fused_moe` import and `BatchDecodeWithPagedKVCacheWrapper.plan(...)` args above match FlashInfer ≥0.2; adjust to your pinned version. The `supports_fp8_moe()` guard lets you fall back to `torch.nn.functional` MoE on pre-Hopper GPUs.
## 4. vLLM baseline (`bench/bench_vllm.py`)
```python
import argparse, time, json
from vllm import LLM, SamplingParams
MODEL_ID = "Qwen/Qwen1.5-MoE-A2.7B"
def main():
ap = argparse.ArgumentParser()
ap.add_argument("--model", default=MODEL_ID)
ap.add_argument("--prompt-len", type=int, default=128)
ap.add_argument("--decode-len", type=int, default=64)
ap.add_argument("--out", default="bench/vllm_results.json")
args = ap.parse_args()
llm = LLM(model=args.model, dtype="float16", enforce_eager=False)
sp = SamplingParams(temperature=0.0, max_tokens=args.decode_len)
results = []
for c in (1, 8, 32):
prompts = ["The quick brown fox " * (args.prompt_len // 5)] * c
# warmup
llm.generate(prompts[:1], sp)
t0 = time.perf_counter()
outs = llm.generate(prompts, sp)
dt = time.perf_counter() - t0
total = sum(len(o.outputs[0].token_ids) for o in outs)
results.append({
"concurrency": c,
"ttft_ms": None, # vLLM doesn't expose TTFT directly; use metrics logger
"decode_tokens_per_sec": total / dt,
"total_tokens_per_sec": total / dt,
})
print(results[-1])
with open(args.out, "w") as f:
json.dump(results, f, indent=2)
if __name__ == "__main__":
main()
```
For real TTFT from vLLM, enable `--enable-prefix-caching` off and read `llm.llm_engine.stat_logger` or use `vllm.entrypoints.openai` with `--disable-log-requests` and parse the metrics endpoint.
## 5. Side-by-side table (`bench/compare.py`)
```python
import json, sys
def load(p):
with open(p) as f:
return {r["concurrency"]: r for r in json.load(f)}
fi = load("bench/flashinfer_results.json")
vl = load("bench/vllm_results.json")
print(f"{'conc':>4} | {'FI TTFT(ms)':>12} | {'vLLM TTFT(ms)':>13} | "
f"{'FI tok/s':>10} | {'vLLM tok/s':>10} | {'speedup':>8}")
print("-" * 78)
for c in sorted(fi):
a, b = fi[c], vl[c]
ttft_a = f"{a['ttft_ms']:.1f}" if a['ttft_ms'] else "n/a"
ttft_b = f"{b['ttft_ms']:.1f}" if b['ttft_ms'] else "n/a"
sp = a['decode_tokens_per_sec'] / b['decode_tokens_per_sec']
print(f"{c:>4} | {ttft_a:>12} | {ttft_b:>13} | "
f"{a['decode_tokens_per_sec']:>10.1f} | "
f"{b['decode_tokens_per_sec']:>10.1f} | {sp:>7.2f}x")
```
## 6. Run order
```bash
bash scripts/install_flashinfer.sh
python bench/bench_flashinfer.py --out bench/flashinfer_results.json
python bench/bench_vllm.py --out bench/vllm_results.json
python bench/compare.py
```
## Architecture notes
- **Compute capability is detected first** in both the install script and `capabilities.py`; the cubin wheel tag is chosen from it, and `supports_fp8_moe()` / `supports_paged_kv_fp8()` gate the fused kernels so pre-Hopper GPUs fall back cleanly.
- **CUDA graph capture** is wrapped in `supports_cuda_graph()` and only applied to the decode step (static shapes), which is where it pays off.
- **Mixed-batch** is exercised by the concurrency sweep (1/8/32) — the paged KV wrapper's `plan()` handles ragged batches natively.
- **vLLM TTFT** requires its metrics logger; the baseline script leaves it `None` unless you wire that in, so the table shows `n/a` rather than a fabricated number.
